Angels of Opression (Blood Angels)

Its been awhile so here is a quick update. I managed to get in two games with my Blood Angels this week. The first was a 2500 point game against Tau Empire and the second was a 1850 point game against Vulkan Marines.

Game 1 was a modified Cities of Death mission that basicly came down to table quarters. To control quarters you had to plant flags in the most buildings in the table quarter. Only troops could plant flags.

The game ended up being pretty one sided with the blood Angels hammering the Tau in the shooting phase. My opponent was in good spirits and took my excellent shooting phases in stride. The Blood Angels ended up winning 2 quarters to none.

Game two was Dawn of War with 5 objectives. He had 3 in his deployment zone and I had 2. I moved to take my two and locked them down. Again my shooting proved to be the game as i manged to contest two of his objectives with Death Company and a drop podding Furioso. A key moment in the game was when my outflanking scouts immobilised his Redeemer full of TH/SS terminators with Vulkan attached in his deployment zone. They ended up playing no part in the game.

These are not very detailed but that is fine. It was good to get the blood Angels out and on the table. It was also good to see them out perform the much cheaper space marines.

Shas'O Giambi Passes test

Today we did a 9000 point vs 9000 point Imperials vs Tau Empire. We had three Cadres vs two Imperila Guard and one ultramarine armies. Fighting in the mix we had 6 players in total.

Giambi managed to snipe out a Veteran sgt with powerfist from an assault squad, a couple meltagun vet guardsmen and check this, whoop a space marine chapter master, built from the Ordo Fraternitas Character Creation Rules, in close combat. Mind you he only took the last wound from him but he did initiate the charge and snipe the other wounds from him in the shooting phase.

The game was a blast and Giambi lived through the carnage. His retinue certainly fell in their goal of protecting the Shas'O leader.

I'll steal some pics from the other local blogs to get some Apocalypse action shots in here.

Shas'O Giambi

Well the Ordo Fraternitas Character creation rules have taken off some in the club and it looks like we are ging to break them in for this saturday's apocalypse game. Here is my first crack at the rules with the new version.

Shas'O Giambi

+1 Wound: +20 points
Bladesinger/Sniper : +20 points
Master Crafted; +35 points

Commander Shas'O: 75 points
Plasma Rifle: +20 points
Missle Pod: +12 points
Shield Generator: +20 points
Stimulent Injector: +10 points
Hard Wired Target Lock: +5 points
Hard Wired Multi Tracker: +5 points
Hard Wired Drone Controller: +0 points
2 x Gun Drones: +20 points

Total- 230 points

Shas'O Giambi spent much time within the ranks of the pathfinders units during his humble beginnings. During the Volasian Incident he was credited with a very modest 200 rail rifle kills against the dreaded horror known as the Necrons. The Tau Empire happened upon the Necrontyr tomb world known to the Imperium as Volas. Upon colonizing the planet the unkowning Tau woke a sleeping sect of Necron Warriors. The conflict lasted 3 months before the Tau decided it was better to withdraw from the conflict then remain in a prolong seige of the world.

To this day Shas'O Giambi hangs with his sniping roots. He chooses to pick out stategic targets within enemy squads to bring the threat to an end in the most effienctly possible way. Enemy commanders usually have no heart to join the battle on the front line once they discover the reknown sniper is present.

Giambi is a very cunning genral and will usually take his elite bodyguard of Crisis Suits into the think of battle with him. Many of enemy units have fallen to the volleys of fire from this torrid overwhelming show of firepower while Giambi himself picks out the more vital members of the unit.

With the crude insticts of a trained killer Giambi also employs the most advance weaponry and wargear the tau Empire Armoury can support. His weapons are of the most pristine nature and rarely if ever fail.

Back in the Saddle

Well today I took the fortress out and primed it thus ending my break from modeling stuff. I'm getting ready to head down to put some more paint on the bad boy to see how we come out.

So I lasted about 2 1/2 days.

Break from building

Yesterday I decided to take a break from building. With the additions to the Armageddon Sons as well as the terrain project I have been building and painting like crazy. It's time for a few days off. I got to lay by the fire last night with my wife and new daughter and it felt good to be seperated from the hobby. I am sure I'll be back at it soo as I am half way through a rather large cities of death building right now.

Forgeworld in your games

This has always been a hot topic in any game group you may have ventured into. For the most part it comes down to two camps, the "sure why not" and the "not on my watch" camps. I have seen some players look quite crossed eyed at the very mention of Forgeworld.

99% of the time i am game for whatever. You want to try something go ahead. As long as I know up front I am usually pretty cool with it. Normal Forgeowrld kits like turrets and whatnot I don't reaqlly care if a player uses them. Want to use a Baneblade in a normal game that is fine just a quick courtesy ask is all I am looking for. I personally feel that most of the Forgeworld stuff is priced slightly higher than something similar already in the rules. So there is a good balance in place.

I have seen players that have dropped $1000 on a Imperial Guard army from Forgeworld and get offended when asked if they have tried the rules for the army. Thier reaction was like Forgeworld rules were the anti-christ of 40k and should be avoided like the plague. These reactions puzzel me. Whats the point of buying resin kits that are "outside" of the game if you are scared of using the rules? If i dropped $1000 on a resin army you bet your willies that I am playing their armylist.

Within the "pro" Forgeworld sect lies two camps as well. There is the "rules first" models second camp and the more purist "If you own it use it" camp. Our gaming club, Ordo Fraternitas uses the second method. If you own it then go ahead and use. We require you to own an actual copy of the rules as well and not just PDF or scanned copies. This works well. Sometimes there are the guys that complain because the converted some special model that looks like or fits into what the Forgeworld model would look like. Thats fine, my opinion is if you did a good job on it and there is no confusion to what it is go for it. Some of the other organizers have a firmer view of the rule that allows for no variation and that is fine if you know that going in.

We allow Forgeworld kits in our tournaments with the previous guidelines as well as No Flyers, Structure points, Gargantuant creatures or anything that uses an apocalypse template. Sometimes we allow flyers and again i don't find anything wrong with any of it.

The players that believe in "rules first models later" are just looking for an advantage. They don't care about the visuals of the game and just want to win. These guys will usually have unpainted armies, models not completely assembled and complain on how their codex got nerfed with the latest release. I'm not saying all of this is bad or unique to this group because i think I am guilty of all of that at one time or another. I watched a game today where the guy had 3 normal plastic drop pods using them as luscious pattern drop pods. He did not have the rulebook from which the were printer, the Forgeworld PDF update to those rules or the model. All he knew is that they were 50 points and he could assault his dread's out of them. His opponent razzed him about cheese and they moved on. Their arrival onto the battlefield influenced the game quite a bit. I kept to myself but I did shake my head at this instance.

This player certainly did not care about the visual of the game. He didn't care that the drop pods shared different profiles on the field and he certainly didn't care that the rules came in a $80 book. In his eyes he recieved an advantage for +15 points and all he had to do was say that these are those for this game. Will he ever buy the rulebook or the models, probably not. Will his gaming partners ever even care? Probably not. If this is how they choose to play then everything is great.

Finally let's touch on the guys that say no way? I wonder a lot why players feel this way. These are usually the guys that will not play Cities of Death, Planetstrike or Apoaclypse. I get the feeling that they feel they have made their investment and anything more is out of the question. Is there anything wrong with this narrow minded approach? Again, no, as long as everyone is on the same page then its all good. I do think its funny when you see a player with this approach walk into a game room with 8 games of Planetstrike going on and you can just see in their eyes that they might be missing out on something but they stick to their guns when questioned about their participation. How can one happen upon 12 guys playing Apoc with the big models and forgeworld goodness galore and not want to be a part of the action on some level? Heck I would love to be the guy to drop in 1000 points of suicide infantry to try and eliminate that $1000 titan model.

So these guys are the ones that won't even consider a Leman Russ varient out of the Imperial Armour series but will tell you how awesome the Leman Russ Exterminator is in the new Imperial Guard codex. When you remind them that you have been playing with one for the last 5 years for 50 points more they just shrug their shoulders and say Forgeworld is broken. Has anyone noticed that a Hydra is 75 points in the new codex but was 200 points in the older ruels for Apocalypse and Forgeworld? How broke is that?

I do find that these guys are the most likely to get their feelings hurt in a game as they will feel they were cheated or you got some advantage on them when they venture outside of their safety zone. This probably is not good for either parties. Is it your job to make sure he has a good time? Somewhat it is. I don't feel you need to babysit each player and play down to their level just so they have a good time. Its a tough call but I think we can figure out a solution.

In closing I will always feel that there is a place for Forgeworld on the game table. It looks cool. It adds to the game. The rules still come from a GW source and they are balanced against the same game system. I urge players to give it a try. Don't look for an excuse as to why you lose your games and pick he was using Forgeworld as the answer. Improve your game and let the other guy use the stuff he purchased to enhance his hobby.

No matter what just roll some more dice.
